The Status Has Been Changed filter on sales order work stacks can be used to distinguish between:
Sales orders that are still in their first status, and have never left that status
Sales orders that have changed status since creation, even if their current status is the same as their original status
The purpose of this is to help identify untouched orders, and those that have been worked on.
