I can't see the assistant
Three things need to be true: your company has the assistant switched on, you have the AI Chatbot role (administrators have it automatically), and you are on a normal Layer page. The assistant steps aside on the Automation Builder and Report Builder screens, which have their own built-in assistants, and it only appears once you are signed in. If you still cannot see it, ask your administrator to check the role.
Can it change my data?
No. The assistant is read-only in its current release: it finds and explains records but does not create, edit or delete anything.
Where does it get its answers?
From your own Layer data and our Help Centre, always within your own permissions. It is not a general web search and does not look outside Layer.
It said the monthly budget has been reached
Your administrator can set a monthly spend cap. When the month's estimated spend reaches it, the assistant pauses until an administrator raises the cap in Settings > AI Chatbot or the next month begins.
It says the API key looks invalid
The AI provider's key may be wrong or expired. An administrator can paste a fresh key in Settings > AI Chatbot.
Is my data used to train the AI?
Your company uses its own AI account, so what the provider may do with data is governed by your agreement with that provider, not by Layer. For the tightest control, use Azure AI Foundry to keep everything inside your own Microsoft tenancy, or a self-hosted model so nothing leaves your network. See Your data and the Layer Assistant.
An answer was slow or cut off
Complex questions that use several lookups take a little longer. If a conversation has been running for a while, starting a New chat often makes answers quicker. If a problem persists, give the answer a thumbs down or chat to our team.
