If your company uses Microsoft 365 sign-in (also known as single sign-on, SSO or Microsoft Entra), you can sign in to The Layer with your work Microsoft account instead of your Layer password.
The button appears on the login page for everyone, but it only works if your company has set it up. If you're not sure, ask your Layer administrator.
The first time: link your account
You do this once. It tells The Layer which Microsoft account belongs to you.
You'll need your Layer username and password. If you've forgotten your password, use Password recovery on the login page first.
On the login page, click Sign in with Microsoft 365.
Choose your work account and complete any steps Microsoft asks for.
On the Link Your Account page, check the Microsoft account shown is yours.
Enter your Layer username and password. It has to be your username here, not your email address.
Click Link Account & Sign In.
If your company uses Layer two-factor authentication and this device isn't trusted yet, enter the code you're sent.
You'll get an email confirming the link. If you ever get that email and it wasn't you, tell your Layer administrator straight away.
Every time after that
Click Sign in with Microsoft 365.
Choose your account. Microsoft asks you to do this each time, even if you only have one.
You're in. You don't need your Layer password or a Layer two-factor code.
Microsoft may also ask for your Microsoft password or an authentication prompt. That depends on your company's Microsoft settings, not on The Layer.
If your password box is greyed out
Your company has turned on Microsoft 365 only, and your account is linked, so your Layer password no longer signs you in. Use the Sign in with Microsoft 365 button.
If your account isn't linked yet, your Layer password still works until you link it.
Signing out and staying signed in
Logging out of The Layer doesn't sign you out of Microsoft. On a shared computer, sign out of Microsoft as well.
You'll be asked to sign in again after 8 hours with no activity in The Layer.
Other Layer apps
The Microsoft button is for The Layer in your browser. The Layer for Outlook asks for your Layer username and password. If your company uses Microsoft 365 only and your account is linked, it won't accept your password, so speak to your administrator.
If your Layer password has expired, you may be asked to change it after signing in with Microsoft.
If something goes wrong
What you see | What to do |
Invalid username or password (on the Link Your Account page) | Check you've entered your Layer username, not your email address or Microsoft password. |
You're asked to link again when you've already linked | Check you picked the right Microsoft account. If you did, ask your administrator to check the Microsoft 365 sign-in settings. |
Your Layer account shares an email address with another user | Ask your administrator to give each user their own email address. You can sign in straight after. |
Sign-in has not been set up or is not enabled for your company | Use your Layer password and ask your administrator about setting it up. |
Too many failed attempts | Wait 15 minutes and try again. |
Your session has expired | Go back to the login page and click Sign in with Microsoft 365 again. |
Microsoft says your account can't be used, or asks for an admin's approval | Personal accounts such as outlook.com and hotmail.com won't work. For a work account, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator. |
For anything else, see Microsoft 365 sign-in: rules, limits and error messages, or ask your Layer administrator.
