If your instance of The Layer has sub-companies activated, you are required to select one for sales orders that are created.

You can enforce sub-company selection on Lead, Company and Opportunity records too, by enabling the system-wide customisation Enable Mandatory Sub-Company For Lead, Customer and Opportunity.
